Why Buy a New Harley-Davidson®
What is the advantage to buying a New Harley-Davidson® over a Pre-Owned Harley?
I’ve been with Hot Metal Harley-Davidson® since 2006 and I started on the sales floor. I eventually became the Sales Manager in 2007 and Operations Manager a few years after that. I’ve been around the block in this dealership and I’ve literally seen thousands of New Harley-Davidson® and pre-owned Harley-Davidson® bikes come and go.
I’m often asked on the showroom floor whether or not I recommend a new or pre-owned Harley-Davidson®. My reply is usually in the form of a question like: What kind of riding do you plan on doing? How many miles do you plan on putting on in a year? What is your budget?
Why do I ask these questions? In sales we call it “qualifying.” We want to know where the customer is at so that we can make a recommendation that makes sense for them. For example, if you were to tell me that you want a touring bike with low mileage that was already dressed up, I’d recommend one of our quality certified pre-owned motorcycles. If you were to tell me that you wanted a low mileage bike that you wanted to make your own and customize yourself, I’d ask you if you would consider buying a new Harley-Davidson® motorcycle.
So, Rocky—Why buy new? Here are some of my thoughts:
The Milwaukee Eight® Engine is the current heartbeat of the current Harley-Davidson® world. The standard engine is the Milwaukee-Eight® 107 engine. The factory upgrade is the Milwaukee-Eight® 114 engine. It accelerates 9% quicker 0-60 and 13% quicker going 60-80MPH. (Why is this important? If you plan on doing highway miles, that acceleration in the 60-80MPH range will come in handy.)
The new engine also comes with four-valve cylinder heads which is a 50% increase in valve area compared to Twin Cam engines. The improved airflow through the engine contributes to higher power output.
The Softail® Models have a new mono-shock frame that is more comfortable and 30 lbs lighter than the previous frame. It’s optimized design contributes to a chassis that is 75% stiffer than prior Dyna® models. This leads to improved handling, braking and acceleration performance.
The new Softail® models and most Touring models come with LED headlights and or taillights. This isn’t something you have to add on yourself, they come standard.
The Touring models feature a new Boom! Box GTS Infotainment system. The home screen display is reduced to three key system buttons: Navigation, Phone, Music. This can all be accessed and managed with the motorcycle hand controls. You can also use the touch screen, but it’s safer to keep your hands on the handlebars at all times. It’s Apple CarPlay compatible. It has a “one-box search” function and a TFT display with 100% more resolution with a 4x higher contrast ratio.
If you are someone that has to get the new iPhone every year, you are going to want the latest technology on your motorcycle. The only way to do that is to buy new, as the Boom! Box GTS can’t be retrofitted to older motorcycles.
All new motorcycles come with a 2-year factory warranty. You can purchase additional warranty to take you beyond the standard 2 years. This will prevent unexpected expenses that wouldn’t be covered otherwise that could cost thousands.
You have to remember, these are machines, they can break at any time. And that’s not a dig on Harley, either. It’s just a fact of life. Machines break, but with a warranty, the Motor Company is right there with you to fix the problem. It allows you to ride “worry-free.”
If you purchase a new motorcycle and decide to extend your warranty, then you have options like rental, travel lodging, travel reimbursement, tire and wheel coverage, all for a minimal $50 deductible and the best part is that it can be wrapped into your financing at the time of purchase.
The final point that I’d like to touch on is that when you purchase a new motorcycle is that it’s “yours.” Besides a technician, no one else has cracked the throttle on your new Harley-Davidson®. You know exactly where it’s been, how it’s been ridden, and to many people that is comforting.
It’s also a blank slate. Many people like to customize their own Harley-Davidson® and with a new motorcycle, you can do that to your taste. Whether you want power and performance, or stylish looks with bolt-on accessories, it’s really easy to do.
